Application Note: Surface Moisture Measurement in Gum Pellet Production

A customer is a company that specializes in manufacturing gum pellets/balls for the chewing gum industry. Currently, they use InSenXe infrared moisture sensors for direct inline measurement after the dewatering and drying processes, and right before packaging.
Although the gum itself has very low moisture and is typically not a concern, surface moisture can still be present. This surface moisture occurs after the dewatering process is complete. Excessive surface water can lead to broken boxes or totes and create a potential risk for bacterial growth. In the past, the customer used fans to dry the water, but this introduced a different problem: to prevent the pellets from sticking, they have to add a powder, and the fans blew some of this powder away, resulting in excessive powder and dust in the air throughout the plant.
The customer has now installed two InSenXe infrared moisture sensors specifically to measure surface moisture. They found that setting an appropriate Span and Zero to achieve a "Go/No-Go" measurement is the most effective approach. They prepared three sample types: no surface moisture, acceptable surface moisture, and excessive moisture. The sample with no water was set to 0.02%, the acceptable range to 0.3%, and the wet sample to approximately 0.8%. Previous calibration attempts using Karl Fisher or a high-temperature oven were ineffective because the total moisture content was extremely low. Now, operators monitor the measurement data, and if any abnormality is detected, they stop loading the pellets to check for surface moisture issues. Currently, the customer is very satisfied with the measurement results.
